Travian Beginner's Handbook

A complete guide for new players โ€” from your first fields to the World Wonder

Romans โ€” The Balanced Empire

Romans can upgrade a resource field and a village building simultaneously โ€” making them the fastest growers. They are excellent for beginners who want flexibility.

Dual Building Strong Infantry Powerful Wall WW Support
I
Days 1โ€“3 โ€” Establish Your Economy
Your first 72 hours set the pace for everything that follows
โ–ผ
๐ŸŒพUpgrade all 4 Cropland fields to level 1, then immediately to level 2. Crop is always the most critical resource โ€” your troops eat it constantly.
๐ŸชตUpgrade Woodcutter, Clay Pit, and Iron Mine each to level 1. Then push them all toward level 2.
๐Ÿ”Keep all field types at roughly the same level โ€” falling behind on any one resource slows everything else down.
๐Ÿ—Upgrade the Main Building to level 3. This reduces construction time for every future build โ€” do it immediately.
๐ŸชBuild a Warehouse and a Granary to store resources. As a Roman you'll fill them faster than other tribes.
Romans are the ONLY tribe that can build a resource field and a village building at the same time. Always use both construction slots โ€” never let one sit empty.
  1. Cropland ร—4 โ†’ level 2 (field slot)
  2. Main Building โ†’ level 3 (village slot)
  3. Woodcutter, Clay Pit, Iron Mine โ†’ level 2 (field slot)
  4. Warehouse โ†’ level 1 (village slot)
  5. Granary โ†’ level 1 (village slot)
II
Days 4โ€“7 โ€” Train Your First Troops
Start your military while keeping the economy growing
โ–ผ
โš”๏ธBuild a Barracks โ€” this unlocks infantry training. Do this on day 4.
๐Ÿ Build a Rally Point โ€” essential for sending troops, viewing incoming attacks, and coordinating with allies.
๐Ÿ—กStart training Legionnaires immediately. Keep the training queue full at all times โ€” even training 2โ€“3 at a time is fine early on.
๐ŸŒพContinue upgrading fields alongside military builds. Don't stop the economy โ€” use your dual build slot for fields while the village slot handles military.
๐Ÿ—บUse your Rally Point to send Legionnaires to raid abandoned Natar villages nearby (shown in grey on the map). Don't attack other real players yet!
Legionnaire
Your first troop. Solid all-rounder โ€” decent attack and defence. Train constantly.
Attack Defence
  1. Rally Point โ†’ level 1
  2. Barracks โ†’ level 3 (higher level = faster troop training)
  3. All resource fields โ†’ level 3 (keep going)
  4. Warehouse โ†’ level 2
  5. Granary โ†’ level 2
Do NOT attack other real players at this stage. Raiding can trigger retaliation from stronger players. Stick to abandoned Natar villages only.
III
Days 8โ€“20 โ€” Grow & Join Your Alliance
Coordinate with your team and specialise your village
โ–ผ
๐ŸคJoin your class alliance if you haven't already. Tell your leader you are playing Romans โ€” they will assign you a role (attacker or defender).
๐Ÿ“ˆContinue upgrading all resource fields. Aim for level 5 on all fields by the end of week 3. This is your economy backbone.
๐ŸฐBuild a City Wall and upgrade to at least level 10. Romans have the strongest wall in the game โ€” it multiplies all defensive troop power.
๐Ÿ›Build an Academy โ€” required to unlock advanced troops later. Build it now so you're not scrambling at endgame.
๐Ÿ”จBuild a Smithy and research attack/defence upgrades for Legionnaires. Even level 1 upgrades make a noticeable difference.
๐ŸบIf your leader assigns you as a defender, start building a Stable and training Equites Caesaris (the best Roman defensive cavalry).
  1. All resource fields โ†’ level 5
  2. City Wall โ†’ level 10
  3. Academy โ†’ level 5
  4. Smithy โ†’ level 1 (research troop upgrades)
  5. Barracks โ†’ level 10 (faster training)
  6. Stable โ†’ level 5 (if building cavalry)
Ask your alliance leader early: "Am I an attacker or a defender?" This determines which troops you focus on and saves you wasting resources on the wrong units.
IV
Days 21+ โ€” Endgame & World Wonder
Your contributions decide whether the alliance wins the server
โ–ผ
๐ŸŒYour alliance will coordinate to conquer a World Wonder site from the Natars. This is the final objective of the server.
๐Ÿ—If assigned as a supply village: max out all resource fields (level 10+) and send resources to the WW village every single day. This is your most important job.
๐Ÿ›กIf assigned as a defender: mass-produce Praetoreans (best Roman defensive infantry) and station them at the WW village. The Natars will attack it relentlessly.
โš”๏ธIf assigned as an attacker: build up Equites Imperatoris cavalry. Coordinate timed attacks with allies against rival WW villages.
๐Ÿ“ฉCheck alliance messages daily. Coordinated attacks must hit at the same time โ€” being even 30 seconds off can cost the battle.
Praetorean
The best Roman defender. Station hundreds at the WW village to absorb Natar waves.
DefenceInfantry
Equites Imp.
Powerful attacking cavalry. Your primary weapon if assigned as an attacker.
AttackCavalry
Equites Caes.
Best Roman defensive cavalry. Great paired with Praetoreans at the WW.
DefenceCavalry
Romans win through versatility. Don't try to be both attacker and defender โ€” pick one role, max it out, and trust your allies to cover the other.

Gauls โ€” The Swift Defenders

Gauls have the fastest troops in the game and the best defensive infantry. They excel at scouting, protecting the World Wonder, and reacting quickly to threats.

Fastest Troops Best Defenders Trapper Passive Superior Scouts
I
Days 1โ€“3 โ€” Establish Your Economy
Crop is king โ€” Gauls train many troops and they eat a lot
โ–ผ
๐ŸŒพUpgrade all 4 Cropland fields to level 1 immediately, then level 2. Crop runs out first โ€” always.
๐ŸชตUpgrade Woodcutter, Clay Pit, and Iron Mine each to level 1 then level 2.
๐Ÿ”Keep fields balanced โ€” all field types should stay at roughly the same level throughout the game.
๐Ÿ—Upgrade the Main Building to level 3 immediately โ€” this speeds up every future build.
๐ŸชBuild Warehouse and Granary to handle your growing resource production.
๐ŸชคDo NOT demolish or ignore the Trapper that Gauls start with โ€” upgrade it to level 3. It passively captures raiding troops while you're offline.
The Trapper is a unique Gaul building. It automatically captures a portion of enemy troops who raid you. Even early on, it discourages attackers โ€” always keep it active.
  1. Cropland ร—4 โ†’ level 2
  2. Main Building โ†’ level 3
  3. Woodcutter, Clay Pit, Iron Mine โ†’ level 2
  4. Trapper โ†’ level 3
  5. Warehouse โ†’ level 2 / Granary โ†’ level 2
II
Days 4โ€“7 โ€” Train Your First Troops
Build your defensive core and get scouts on the field
โ–ผ
๐Ÿ Build a Rally Point โ€” essential for troop management and checking incoming attacks.
โš”๏ธBuild a Barracks and start training Swordsmen. These are the best defensive infantry in the entire game โ€” they are your core unit.
๐Ÿ‡Build a Stable (requires Main Building level 5) and train a handful of Pathfinders. Always have 3โ€“5 scouts available.
๐Ÿ”ญUse Pathfinders to scout nearby Natar villages before sending main troops to raid them. Never raid blind.
๐ŸŒพKeep upgrading fields in parallel. Don't neglect the economy for military.
Swordsman
The best defensive infantry in Travian. Your core unit โ€” mass produce these throughout the game.
DefenceInfantry
Pathfinder
Fast scouts. Use them to spy on enemies, monitor Natar villages, and warn allies of incoming threats.
ScoutFast
  1. Rally Point โ†’ level 1
  2. Barracks โ†’ level 5
  3. Main Building โ†’ level 5 (needed for Stable)
  4. Stable โ†’ level 3 (to train Pathfinders)
  5. All resource fields โ†’ level 3
III
Days 8โ€“20 โ€” Grow & Join Your Alliance
Your speed and defence become a major alliance asset
โ–ผ
๐ŸคJoin your class alliance and tell your leader you are playing Gauls. You will almost certainly be assigned as a defender and scout coordinator.
๐Ÿ“ˆPush all resource fields to level 5 by end of week 3. Swordsmen are crop-heavy โ€” you need a strong economy to sustain a large army.
๐ŸชคUpgrade the Trapper to level 10 or higher. At this level it catches significant numbers of enemy raiders passively โ€” great protection while you sleep.
๐ŸฐBuild a Palisade (Gaul wall) and upgrade to level 10. The wall multiplies the defensive power of all troops stationed in your village. Never leave it at level 0.
๐Ÿ›Build an Academy and research Druids (strong defensive cavalry with high speed) via the Stable.
๐Ÿ”ญUse Pathfinders to actively monitor enemy alliance activity. Report large troop movements to your alliance leader โ€” your speed makes you the best early-warning system.
Gaul troops are the fastest in the game. This means you can recall troops from distant raids before an attack reaches your village โ€” always watch the Rally Point for incoming attacks.
  1. All resource fields โ†’ level 5
  2. Palisade โ†’ level 10
  3. Trapper โ†’ level 10
  4. Academy โ†’ level 5
  5. Stable โ†’ level 10 (unlock Druids, Haeduan)
  6. Barracks โ†’ level 10
IV
Days 21+ โ€” Endgame & World Wonder
Gauls are the shield of the World Wonder โ€” nobody defends better
โ–ผ
๐ŸŒYour alliance will seize a World Wonder site from the Natars and begin building it to level 100 to win the server.
๐Ÿ›กAs a Gaul, your primary role is defending the WW village. The Natars send increasingly powerful attacks as the WW grows. Your Swordsmen are what stop them.
โš”๏ธMass-produce Swordsmen โ€” aim for thousands. Station a permanent large force at the WW village, and reinforce it when Natar attacks are expected.
๐Ÿ”ญKeep multiple Pathfinders patrolling enemy territory. Alert the alliance immediately when you detect troop build-ups near the WW.
๐ŸŒพIf also assigned as a supply village, max out your crop fields and send daily resource shipments to the WW village to fuel its construction.
๐Ÿ‡Train a squad of Haeduan cavalry โ€” if you need to go on offence, these are your best option. They also carry resources efficiently.
Swordsman
Mass produce thousands. The backbone of WW defence against Natar waves.
DefenceInfantry
Druidrider
Fast defensive cavalry. Great for rushing reinforcements to the WW when under attack.
DefenceCavalry
Haeduan
Powerful offensive cavalry. Use for attacks if needed, but Gauls are primarily defenders.
AttackCavalry
Pathfinder
Keep active throughout the whole game. Intelligence wins wars.
Scout
Speed is your superpower. When the WW is under attack, Gaul players can send reinforcements faster than any other tribe. Always keep troops close enough to react in time.

Teutons โ€” The Relentless Raiders

Teutons produce cheap, numerous troops and raid constantly. They are the primary offensive force in most alliances, destroying rival defences and pressuring enemy World Wonders.

Cheapest Troops Raiding Power Large Armies Brutal Offense
I
Days 1โ€“3 โ€” Establish Your Economy
Teutons burn through crop fast โ€” prioritise food production from the start
โ–ผ
๐ŸŒพUpgrade all 4 Cropland fields to level 1 then level 2 immediately. Teutons field massive armies โ€” they consume enormous crop.
๐ŸชตUpgrade Woodcutter, Clay Pit, and Iron Mine to level 1 then level 2. Wood and Clay are needed most early on for buildings.
๐Ÿ”Keep fields balanced and climbing. As a raider, you'll supplement your economy with looted resources โ€” but don't rely on raids alone early.
๐Ÿ—Upgrade the Main Building to level 3 immediately to speed up all construction.
๐ŸชBuild Warehouse and Granary. Teutons get a unique bonus โ€” their storage buildings hold more per level than other tribes.
Teutons have a 25% capacity bonus on Warehouses and Granaries. This means you can store more raided resources and don't need to upgrade storage as often โ€” a big economic advantage.
  1. Cropland ร—4 โ†’ level 2
  2. Main Building โ†’ level 3
  3. Woodcutter, Clay Pit, Iron Mine โ†’ level 2
  4. Warehouse โ†’ level 2
  5. Granary โ†’ level 2
II
Days 4โ€“7 โ€” Train Your First Troops & Start Raiding
Get Clubswingers on the field as fast as possible
โ–ผ
โš”๏ธBuild a Barracks on day 4 โ€” this is your highest priority. Teutons live and die by their troop count.
๐Ÿ Build a Rally Point โ€” you'll need this to manage your constant raiding operations.
๐Ÿช“Train Clubswingers constantly. These are the cheapest troops in the game. Keep the queue full 24/7 โ€” even queuing 5 at a time when resources are low is fine.
๐Ÿ—บSend Clubswingers to raid inactive Natar villages near you immediately. Raiding is how Teutons supercharge their economy โ€” resources raided can be put straight back into more troops.
๐Ÿ“‹Check the Rally Point regularly for incoming attacks. If you spot one coming, recall your raiding troops to defend.
Clubswinger
Cheapest troop in the game. Weak individually but devastating in huge numbers. Train hundreds.
AttackRaider
Spearman
Your defensive infantry. Train some alongside Clubswingers to protect your village when raids are out.
DefenceInfantry
  1. Rally Point โ†’ level 1
  2. Barracks โ†’ level 5 (faster training)
  3. All resource fields โ†’ level 3
  4. Warehouse โ†’ level 3
  5. Granary โ†’ level 3
Teutons are often raided in return. Always keep some Spearmen at home while your Clubswingers are out raiding. Never leave your village completely empty of troops.
III
Days 8โ€“20 โ€” Grow Your War Machine
Expand your raiding range and unlock more powerful troops
โ–ผ
๐ŸคJoin your class alliance. Teutons are almost always assigned as the primary attacking force โ€” embrace this role.
๐Ÿ“ˆPush all resource fields to level 5. Use a mix of farmed resources and raided loot to fund this. Never stop building fields.
๐ŸฐBuild an Earth Wall (Teuton wall) and upgrade to at least level 10. Despite being an attacking tribe, a strong wall protects you from retaliation while your troops are out raiding.
๐Ÿ‡Build a Stable and train Paladins. They are fast cavalry that carry more loot per raid than Clubswingers โ€” great for long-range raiding runs.
๐Ÿ›Build an Academy to unlock advanced troop research. Start researching attack upgrades in the Smithy.
๐Ÿ”จBuild a Smithy and research attack upgrades for Clubswingers immediately โ€” at high levels this dramatically increases their power.
Paladin
Fast cavalry with good carry capacity. Ideal for long-distance raids. Unlock these as soon as possible.
AttackCavalry
Axefighter
Stronger than Clubswingers. Research via Academy + Smithy and start replacing Clubswingers mid-game.
AttackInfantry
  1. All resource fields โ†’ level 5
  2. Earth Wall โ†’ level 10
  3. Academy โ†’ level 5
  4. Smithy โ†’ level 5 (research attack upgrades)
  5. Stable โ†’ level 10 (unlock Paladins โ†’ Teutonic Knights later)
  6. Barracks โ†’ level 15 (faster Clubswinger / Axefighter training)
The Teuton philosophy: quantity beats quality. A thousand Clubswingers with maxed attack upgrades will overwhelm much smaller numbers of expensive troops. Keep the numbers growing.
IV
Days 21+ โ€” Endgame & World Wonder
Teutons are the hammer that cracks open the enemy's World Wonder
โ–ผ
๐ŸŒYour alliance will seize a World Wonder site and race to build it to level 100. Rival alliances will try to stop you โ€” your job is to stop them first.
โš”๏ธAs a Teuton, your role is destroying enemy defences protecting rival WW villages. Coordinate massive attacks with your alliance to overwhelm their defenders.
๐Ÿ‡Save up a large force of Teutonic Knights (the most powerful attacking cavalry in the game). These are your endgame weapon โ€” do not waste them on small raids.
๐ŸŒพMax out your crop fields to feed your enormous army. At endgame a large Teuton army can consume thousands of crop per hour โ€” plan accordingly.
๐Ÿ•Timing is everything. Coordinated attacks that land simultaneously are far more effective than individual strikes. Follow your leader's exact timing instructions.
๐Ÿ›กKeep some Spearmen at home. Never send your entire army out โ€” retaliation attacks will come, and an empty village is easy prey.
Teutonic Knight
The most powerful attack cavalry in Travian. Your endgame goal โ€” build hundreds and save them for coordinated WW strikes.
AttackCavalry
Paladin
Still useful for raiding and harassment attacks while Knights are being saved for major offensives.
AttackCavalry
Axefighter
Cheap and powerful infantry. Send large waves as "fodder" before Knights to absorb defensive fire.
AttackInfantry
Spearman
Keep some home at all times. Your only real defence while the army is on campaign.
Defence
StepWhat you do
1. ScoutGaul Pathfinders confirm enemy WW defence numbers
2. PlanAlliance leader calculates required attack size and timing
3. Wave 1Send cheap Axefighters/Clubswingers to absorb defenders
4. Wave 2Teutonic Knights follow seconds later to finish off weakened defence
5. ResultEnemy WW is undefended โ€” alliance can now attack it freely
Never send Teutonic Knights in Wave 1. They are too expensive to waste as cannon fodder. Always lead with cheap infantry first, then follow with your elite cavalry.
ยท ยท ยท

Universal Rules โ€” Applies to All Tribes

๐ŸŒพCrop first, always. Every tribe needs food. Running out of crop means your troops start dying automatically โ€” never let this happen.
๐Ÿ“‹Never leave queues empty. Building queue and troop training queue should always have something in them, even if it's small.
๐Ÿ Build the Rally Point early. You need it to see incoming attacks. Log in regularly โ€” being caught off-guard with no troops home is devastating.
๐ŸคCommunicate with your alliance. Ask your leader what role to play. A coordinated team of six is stronger than six players doing their own thing.
๐Ÿ“ฉRead alliance messages. Attack timing, defence requests, and resource sharing happen through messages. Check in at least once a day.
๐Ÿ›กNever leave your village empty. Always keep some troops home as a deterrent, even if most of your army is elsewhere.
